K-12 Health Curriculum Initiative - SD HealthEDventure

Introduction

South Dakota HealthEDventure
is a comprehensive K-12 health curriculum that provides access to health, guidance, wellness, and career education. It is a “one-stop” K-12 health education website incorporating health, counseling and academic content standards, as well as information from health care organizations and associations in the state.

The Need

In South Dakota, approximately 131,000 young people attend the state’s elementary, middle and high schools for about 6 hours of classroom time each day for up to 13 of the most formative years of their lives. Because schools are the only institutions that can reach nearly all youth, they are in a unique position to improve both the education and health status of young people throughout the state. Because of funding issues, many school districts do not have access to new and innovative curriculum – especially in the health and wellness areas. This project provides SD HealthEDventure free of charge to all South Dakota school districts.

Project Description

SD HealthEDventure is a school-based instructional framework that provides resources for students, educators and parents on such topics as: food and nutrition, fitness and exercise, personal safety, the human body, diseases and prevention, relationships, character education, substance abuse, career education, growth and development, emotional and mental health, first aid, academic success skills, health resources, health and the media, and health and cultural issues.

Features of the K-12 website include:

  • Interactive K-12 lesson plans based on health, physical education, math, science, social studies, language arts, and guidance and counseling standards.
  • A scope and sequence for delivery which specifies what health topics should be taught at each grade level.
  • Separate sites for Kids (K-5), Teens (6-8), Parents and Educators that are secure and password protected.
  • A Fitness Center that includes a Health Planner/Journal as well as a site for parents/students to set goals for nutrition and exercise and track progress.
  • A Health Library featuring video clips, a dictionary, and suggested reading lists, as well as related articles for students, parents, and educators.
  • Experiments and lab exercises for each lesson, as well as games and quizzes.
  • Career Awareness, Exploration, and Planning activities found on the Career EDventure site.
  • A Parent site that includes information and activities on each of the topics that parents can do with their children.
  • A Teacher site that provides a suggested plan of study for each grade level, standards correlation, instructional strategies, lesson plans, resources for each topic, and an assessment/rubric bank.
  • A question and answer feature giving students an opportunity to receive more in-depth information on a particular topic from an expert in that particular field.
