Cut Salt in Half

The American Medical Association, The American Dietetic Association and the American Heart Association are teaming up to launch a campaign to cut American’s salt intake by half.

In a concentrated effort to reduce the risk of high blood pressure, risk or heart disease and stroke, experts are urging Americans to limit their salt intake.

The average American consumes 4,000 to 6,000 milligrams of salt every day.  The Food and Drug Administration recommends a limit of 2,400 milligrams daily and the Institute of medicine recommends 1,500 milligrams per day.

With that goal in mind here are a few tips to reduce your salt intake.  Removing your salt shaker from the table is only the first step.

  • Identify foods that have a high sodium content.

  • When dining out, ask for unsalted menu items.

  • Use herbs and spices to season your food

  • Remove salt from recipes when possible.

  • Don’t add extra salt to your popcorn.
