Healthy Pregnancy

Healthy Babies Begin Before Conception

If you are planning a family, the first step toward having a healthy baby is taking good care of yourself before you become pregnant.  About half of all pregnancies are unplanned, therefore, every woman should:

  • Take a multi-vitamin that has 400 mcg. folic acid each day

  • Have regular medical checkups

  • Talk to your healthcare provider about any medical problems and medicine use

  • Talk to your healthcare provider about avoiding any substances at home and work that may be harmful to developing baby

  • Keep vaccinations current

  • Eat a healthy, well balanced diet and exercise regularly

  • Avoid eating raw or undercooked meat

  • Avoid alcohol, tobacco and street drugs

  • Limit the amount of caffeine you consume

The Our Healthy Baby ™ Program is a prenatal care program offered to participating plan members who are expecting.  This program is designed to be educational and provide information necessary to make choices for a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Enrolled members are sent pregnancy-related information each trimester, including information for specific pregnancy-related health issues. They are also given an opportunity to ask a qualified physician questions regarding prenatal care.
